One more thing, for future reference as much as anything, the video aspect ratio may sometimes be wrong - lots of examples on youtube of stretched or squashed videos. This will preserve the original quality, but may not always be possible. A very low number will give an increase in file size, but the output quality will obviously never exceed the quality of the input, so no need to go too far here.ĭepending on your input file format, you might also try "copy" for the audio. I often set the video quality in the range 20 to 30. Just wanted to add that with Avidemux, you can also configure the quality settings for audio and video. Now I've been through the process, it makes much more sense, so your detailed settings will help me even more.

just spotted your second more detailed reply - you were clearly typing as I was. So, thanks for the suggestions much appreciated. We're not talking broadcast quality - but then the original wasn't. Result? A video file that runs in VLC and is only 11.8 MB. There you will find the "Rotate" item which needs to be selected in the right-hand panel, and the angle of rotation chosen by selecting "rotate" in the left-hand panel.Īha.cracked it.downloaded avidemux specified the file as MPEG4 AVC saved it as an avi (though the program tried to specify it as "all files"). In the video section of the options you will find the Filters. If the latter, then with VLCplayer, the video can be rotated during playback by digging deep into the options. I was actually unsure whether you wanted to save a new video, or just watch the original the right way up. This sounds complex, but once you choose a method and persevere with it, the thing gets simpler. It's possible to add this, but its simpler to use Avidemux with the following output settings:įinal file size is a trade off between amount of compression and quality (much like saving a JPEG).

My preferred option nowadays is H.264 which is not initially installed with virtualdub.

You can choose from the various Video compression options. Each individual frame is like a Tiff or BMP file. The very large output from Virtualdub is clearly uncompressed. You need to choose a compression method (codec) and quality setting for the output file. I'm glad you made some progress, even if it mayfeel like its in a wrong direction.įile sizes - that's fairly easy to resolve. I'm guessing there might be another way (the easy way of course is to shoot in landscape in the first place, but that's not an option for the files I already have). I've found a snag - the output file sizes! In one case, the original Nikon avi file was 68.2MB the ACDSee output file is 179 MB, but the virtualdub file takes the prize at a whopping 1.33 GB!! Both processes have given files that play in VLC.

I also got hold of virtualdub and found out how to do a rotate with that. I found how to save the rotated file out of ACDSee.
